Herod of Chalcis was one of the many grandchildren of Herod the Great. In contrast to his flamboyant brother, Herod Agrippa, Herod of Chalcis seems to have led a more peaceful life. He eventually received the title of 'King of Chalcis' circa 41 from Claudius at the behest of his brother - the close relation with the two men is clearly expressed in his coinage with an issue showing him and Herod Agrippa crowning the emperor (RPC I 4777). When his brother died in 44, Herod Agrippa was given responsibility over the Temple in Jerusalem along with the appointment of its high priests until his death in 48, when he was succeeded by his son, Aristoboulos V. His coins are all very rare today, this type being known from just a single other example.
